Death & escape
Once it was becoming more evident that the Germans were losing the war, Dr. Mengele as well as many other Nazi's went into hiding and disguised themselves. Dr. Mengele disguised himself as an infantry soldier. He was caught by the allies then later released. He obtained a fake name, passport, and and italian residency with the help of The International Committee of the Red Cross who provided the papers a a gesture unwittingly along with many other Nazi's such as Klaus Barbie. He fled to South America and entered Argentina in 1949. He moved from country to country to avoid being caught. He had bounties, rewards, and warrants out to help find him but never was found. While living in Brazil he went for a swim where he suffered a stroke, drowned, and died. He was buried under a false name, "Wolfgang Gerhard", in Embu. He remained free and was never caught for 35 years. He died on February 7, 1979. After the possibility of his death being a hoax, a DNA test was made from his body in 1992 and was found to be that, that was in fact his body. His family handed over his diaries, journals, and letters to investigators and confessed to covering up for him. The mystery of his death was solved.
